About me

Ioana Ciocan is a lecturer at the Department of Ancient History, Archaeology and Art History of the Faculty of History of the University of Bucharest, Romania’s Commissioner for the Venice Biennale, CEO – Art Safari, member of the scientific board of the Cotroceni National Museum and of the Founding and Organizing Committee of the Museum of the Horrors of Communism.

In 2021 Romanian President Klaus Iohannis awarded him the “Cultural Merit” Medal, Class III, Category C – “Fine Arts”.

Organizer of the exhibition “Perspectives”, curator Wim Waelput, within the International Art Festival EUROPALIA ed. XXVII, BOZAR Museum, Brussels, Belgium (2019-2020). Director of the exhibition program “Romanian Oil Painting Master Corneliu Baba, China Tour Exhibition”: Quan Shanshi Museum in Hangzhou, Jiangxi Provincial Art Museum, Ningbo Huamao Art Museum, Han Yuchen Art Museum, Handan and at the Gallery of Chinese Academy of Oil Painting organized by Quan Shansi Art Museum, Art Society Cultural Foundation and Romanian Cultural Institute (2018-2019).

Ioana is the initiator and coordinator of the first art program in public space in post-december Romania: Project 1990 (Piața Presei Libere, Bucharest, January 2010-April 2014).

Member of the jury of the national competition for the selection of the project that represented Romania at the 58th and 59th edition of the Venice Biennale, Curatorial Project Competition – Logo Bucharest, a competition launched by the Bucharest City Hall (2017); Equestrian Statue – contemporary subject, part of the Timișoara Biennial of Architecture BETA (2016), Union of Fine Artists of Romania – Curatorial Projects Competition (2015), Art on Display (2014), Expanded Space (2014), SPAM edition I Copy-Paste (2013).

He published Sculptures by Chance, ed. Humanitas (2022), “Young Blood. The Art of Your Time”, ed (2019), “a+b” (2016), “Transformation. Romanian Sculpture 25 Years After the Revolution” (2015) and “Project 1990-program of art in public space, Bucharest 2010-2014” (2014)
